Years in current role: 36

What sustainability initiative or environmental goal has your organization made the most progress on in the past year?

We’re making exciting progress in several areas. For example, the team at RIT with support from the REMADE Institute, in collaboration with Goodwill of the Finger Lakes, Nike, and AmberCycle, has developed an automated system to dismantle garments — a key step toward enabling larger-scale textile-to-textile recycling. Once enhanced and commercialized, this technology can transform how we manage textile waste.

In addition, RIT has developed and demonstrated technology for the automated disassembly of EV battery pack using AI, computer vision and robotics. AI and computer vision enable automated detection of fastener type and location, allowing the robot to select the right tool for a custom-build end effector. RIT has also developed rapid methods to determine the state of health of EV battery modules to support remanufacturing.

Lastly, we’ve made progress in developing flexible robotic manufacturing cells where robots perform tasks based on feedback from computer vision and AI systems rather than acting on fixed, pre-programmed instructions. Applications include robotic inspection of surface defects, robotic sorting of parts, and automation of spring grinding processes.

What gives you confidence about how Rochester businesses and institutions are addressing environmental challenges?

I feel really confident because we’re seeing a lot of momentum locally. RIT has two programs — the New York State Pollution Prevention Institute and the Center of Excellence in Advanced & Sustainable Manufacturing — that have been doing incredible work helping businesses. They’ve put on webinars, meetings and trainings, and the turnout has been higher than ever, which tells me the community is really engaged. We’ve also got great collaboration happening. GIS is very active, and groups like Greater Rochester Enterprise and the Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce are leaning in to support businesses on sustainability. When you look at the big picture, it’s clear there’s a strong commitment here in Rochester to keep moving forward on environmental priorities.

What area do you think needs more attention or collaboration to strengthen Rochester’s environmental future?

In my opinion, there are a lot of areas that need attention if we want economical and effective solutions to environmental concerns. One area I’m really interested in is embedded AI — using it in applications that can make processes smarter and more sustainable. We’re doing a lot of work on this at RIT and through the REMADE Institute, and I know others are too. For example, we’re looking at things like the circular economy, rare earth elements recovery and recycling, and similar applications. Beyond that, I think green chemistry and building resilient supply chains are also critical areas that deserve more focus.

What advice would you offer to individuals or organizations that want to start making a measurable environmental difference?

Taking a long-term view is critical when it comes to sustainability. I’d encourage everyone to follow their passions and connect with others who share similar ideas because those networks can provide tremendous support and guidance along the way. It’s also important to broaden your awareness of available resources, including funding opportunities that can help achieve your goals. And don’t overlook local organizations, they can be invaluable partners in providing guidance and support throughout the journey.

What’s your favorite way to enjoy the natural beauty of the Rochester area?

I love spending time on the lakes, boating, and enjoying a day out on the water. I also like driving throughout the Finger Lakes region, visiting local wineries and taking in the scenery.
