What gives you confidence about how Rochester businesses and institutions are addressing environmental challenges?

The types of discussions and the subsequent projects that are being born from these discussions should give the entire community confidence. I believe that the current leadership in the city and the county understand the challenges and are working diligently to face them head on. Also, the diversity of the projects from infrastructure, to waterways, building renovations and revitalizations, transportation and environmental clean-ups; Rochester businesses want to address these challenges. I have confidence because things are happening. When things stand still is when you start to worry.

What advice would you offer to individuals or organizations that want to start making a measurable environmental difference?

I think that a lot of times we look at problems and say that something is “too big of a problem” or “It won’t really make a difference.” Even this question attempts to quantify a difference as “measurable.” The reality is that there is no initiative, no action that is too small, and in some way, every action is a measurable difference. For a business it may be as simple as creating a recyclable option along with a waste basket. For an individual it may be cleaning up a section of their street. Those small actions, repeated and multiplied, become the measurable difference.

What’s your favorite way to enjoy the natural beauty of the Rochester area?

From golf and hiking to camping and boating, Rochester and the surrounding area has endless opportunities. My wife and I enjoy quiet weekends at our camp just south of Rochester and walks along the Erie Canal in Brockport where we live.
