Executive Director, Climate Solutions Accelerator of the Genesee-Finger Lakes Region
Years in current role: 7
What sustainability initiative or environmental goal has your organization made the most progress on in the past year?
About six months ago, we launched the Regenerative Futures Lab, which convenes monthly to explore (1) how the systems we participate in contribute to environmental and social harms, and (2) how we can collectively opt out of the extractive economy and reinvest in more regenerative options. I’ve learned a lot from participating so far and look forward to deepening that learning over the coming year. All are welcome to join the fun!
What area do you think needs more attention or collaboration to strengthen Rochester’s environmental future?
We need to focus on reducing the demand for energy, through both efficiency and conservation, and meeting our remaining energy needs with renewables, such as wind, solar and geothermal. We also need to transform our transportation and food systems, to make it possible for local residents to meet their needs and enjoy fulfilling lives without harming the environment. EVERYONE has a role to play in advancing this transition and collaboration is a must.
What advice would you offer to individuals or organizations that want to start making a measurable environmental difference?
Be the person in the room who raises questions about the environmental impact of your organization’s work. The natural world can’t advocate for itself, so it needs eco-conscious humans to speak up on its behalf. Also, take the initiative to educate yourself about climate change, biodiversity loss, plastic pollution and other urgent environmental issues. Because of how algorithms shape our media landscape, this information probably won’t come your way unless you seek it out, even though it’s critically important for your health and wellbeing.
