President, ACES-Energy

Years in current role: 16

What sustainability initiative or environmental goal has your organization made the most progress on in the past year?

Each year we look to expand our reach and introduce sustainable renewable energy systems to new businesses, homeowners and municipalities. This year, we have contributed to unique geothermal and solar applications at the Brighton Town Hall, Letchworth State Park, Maplewood Park, Kittelberger Florist & Gifts, in addition to our 100-plus residential geothermal installations. My personal favorite was adding a Solar PV system at Weider Hall, home to the Genesee Co-op Federal Credit Union, to couple it with our recently completed geothermal system utilizing a neighboring NYS DEC remediated brownfield site as the well field. The Climate Solution Accelerator of the Genesse-Finger Lakes Region will soon also call this home.

What area do you think needs more attention or collaboration to strengthen Rochester’s environmental future?

We need to work hand in hand with local funding sources to provide low-cost financing for residential energy efficiency improvements. While there are some limited programs available from NYSERDA, each one has hurdles that are sometimes hard to overcome. Having additional local financing offerings that have no hidden fees, that are transparent and flexible will make it easier for families to play a positive role in saving energy and reducing their environmental footprint.

What advice would you offer to individuals or organizations that want to start making a measurable environmental difference?

My advice to those looking to make environmental differences is to find a comparable successful business and talk to them. Utilize their environmental achievements as a tool to help you succeed. Find out what worked for them and what did not work. Within your organization, develop your strategy and a champion to hold others accountable. Be prepared to start small and develop both short and long-term goals aligning with sustainable efforts.

What’s your favorite way to enjoy the natural beauty of the Rochester area?

Coaching my kid’s multiple sports teams in football and lacrosse, raising chickens and tending to a large garden is my favorite way to enjoy the outdoors. In addition, being longstanding President of the Webster Ridge Runners Snowmobile Club keeps me plenty busy volunteering on behalf of our 600-plus member base and 60-plus private landowners we partner with.
