What sustainability initiative or environmental goal has your organization made the most progress on in the past year?

Over the past year, our firm has made the most progress in reducing the environmental impact of our operations by transitioning to paperless reporting, minimizing chemical waste in sampling and analysis, and adopting fuel-efficient vehicles for field work. These efforts have lowered our resource use and emissions while aligning our daily practices with the same sustainability standards we promote to our clients.

What gives you confidence about how Rochester businesses and institutions are addressing environmental challenges?

We’re encouraged by how Rochester businesses and institutions are increasingly proactive in addressing environmental challenges. Many have strengthened their environmental management systems, invested in air quality and waste reduction initiatives, and sought professional guidance to ensure compliance and sustainability. This growing commitment to measurable improvements gives us confidence that our community is taking meaningful, science-based steps toward long-term environmental stewardship.

What area do you think needs more attention or collaboration to strengthen Rochester’s environmental future?

To enhance Rochester’s environmental future, it is essential to foster increased collaboration in managing workplace air quality, promoting sustainable operations, and ensuring environmental health and safety. When businesses, institutions, and professional associations work together to align environmental performance with the well-being of workers, the entire community reaps the rewards.

What advice would you offer to individuals or organizations that want to start making a measurable environmental difference?

Making a measurable difference in environmental health and safety starts with small, practical steps and a spirit of collaboration. Every effort — whether improving indoor air quality, reducing waste, or choosing safer materials — contributes to lasting change. When businesses, schools, professional associations and community partners share their knowledge and data, they build stronger, healthier and more resilient communities. Getting involved with local organizations such as the Western New York American Industrial Hygiene Association (WNYAIHA), the Genesee Valley Chapter of ASSP, and the Genesee Finger Lakes Chapter of the Air & Waste Management Association is a great place to start.

What’s your favorite way to enjoy the natural beauty of the Rochester area?

I’ve lived in the Rochester area my entire life, and it’s truly home to me. My favorite ways to enjoy its natural beauty are e-biking along the historic Erie Canal, strolling through charming village sidewalks, visiting the Seneca Park Zoo with my grandkids, and taking day trips to the Finger Lakes or the Lake Ontario shoreline. I also love how the region blends nature with culture — there’s always a museum, park or scenic spot to explore just around the corner. In winter, I make the most of the season by getting outside for winter walking, bird-watching, snow shoveling, cookouts, or simply enjoying the quiet beauty of a fresh snowfall.
