What sustainability initiative or environmental goal has your organization made the most progress on in the past year?

Over the past year, Ibero-American Action League has made its strongest progress in advancing community-centered climate and environmental health education. We’ve integrated sustainability into our programming, expanded training on climate justice for Latino and Black communities, and strengthened partnerships that connect families with energy-efficient resources and green workforce pathways. By framing sustainability through cultural relevance and equity, we’re helping residents reduce environmental burdens while building long-term resilience across Rochester’s Latino community. In 2025, we also added a Climate Justice Fellow to ensure that we are able to provide more outreach and resources specifically tailored to the populations we serve.

What gives you confidence about how Rochester businesses and institutions are addressing environmental challenges?

I’m encouraged by how Rochester’s businesses and institutions are increasingly centering equity, community partnerships and measurable action in their environmental efforts. More organizations are embracing climate justice, investing in energy efficiency, supporting green workforce development, and engaging communities of color in meaningful ways. I see a growing commitment to collaboration — across health, education and industry — which strengthens our region’s ability to address environmental challenges together. This collective momentum gives me confidence that Rochester is moving toward a more sustainable and inclusive future.

What area do you think needs more attention or collaboration to strengthen Rochester’s environmental future?

Rochester needs stronger collaboration between environmental organizations and frontline communities — especially Latino and Black neighborhoods most affected by pollution, energy burden and climate impacts. We must invest more in culturally grounded education, equitable access to clean energy, and green workforce pathways that reflect community voices. Better coordination across government, businesses and grassroots groups will help ensure that climate solutions are designed with, not just for, the people most impacted. Strengthening these partnerships is essential for building a healthier, more resilient and more inclusive environmental future for our region.

What advice would you offer to individuals or organizations that want to start making a measurable environmental difference?

Start small, stay consistent and center people. For individuals, choose one or two actions you can measure — energy use, waste reduction or supporting local sustainability efforts — and build from there. For organizations, begin with an internal assessment to understand your environmental impact, then set clear goals tied to equity and community benefit. Partner with frontline communities early, not after decisions are made. Collaboration with local groups, like those working in climate justice, ensures solutions are culturally relevant and sustainable. Most importantly, track your progress and share it — transparency strengthens accountability and inspires others to take action.

What’s your favorite way to enjoy the natural beauty of the Rochester area?

My favorite way to enjoy Rochester’s natural beauty is spending time along Seneca Lake, the Finger Lakes, and our local parks and trails. Whether walking, reflecting, or simply taking in the water and green spaces, these places remind me why protecting our environment matters for future generations. The blend of urban and natural landscapes keeps me grounded and inspired. Our region’s beauty and outdoor opportunities are a big part of why I’m proud to call Rochester home!
