What sustainability initiative or environmental goal has your organization made the most progress on in the past year?
Over the past year, I have helped numerous clients proactively manage environmental risks and further their environmental sustainability goals. As a partner in the Harter Secrest & Emery Environmental, Land Use and Zoning practice, I’ve guided organizations in identifying and mitigating potential liabilities, negotiating innovative resolutions with regulatory agencies and stakeholders, and when necessary, advocating in litigation to protect their interests. I take a very holistic approach — combining technical environmental issues with creative problem-solving and strategic counsel — to deliver solutions that not only meet compliance requirements but also support long-term goals.
What gives you confidence about how Rochester businesses and institutions are addressing environmental challenges?
Rochester stands out with incredibly talented environmental professionals — lawyers, engineers, consultants, professors, state regulators and industry representatives — who share a deep understanding of current environmental challenges. There seems to be a growing trend among these groups to collaborate and expand their knowledge and understanding of the environment, which gives me confidence that the Rochester environmental community is and continues to be well-suited to face environmental challenges.
What area do you think needs more attention or collaboration to strengthen Rochester’s environmental future?
As far as we have come and as much collaboration as there is today, there still seems to be tension between the local and state regulators, who each, at times, seem to be operating with different priorities, timelines and constraints. Both levels of government are intending to serve the public interest, but the disconnect results in a frustrated local approval process, discontent at the local level, and the ultimate hinderance of meaningful development designed further environmental and social goals. Increased unity and collaboration can strengthen the state of Rochester’s environmental health.
What advice would you offer to individuals or organizations that want to start making a measurable environmental difference?
The best way to make a measurable environmental difference is to start with education of environmental issues most important to the individual or organization. Create a space and foster an environment focused on learning about environmental issues from all angles.
What’s your favorite way to enjoy the natural beauty of the Rochester area?
I believe that Upstate New York, specifically Rochester, is incredibly special and one of the most beautiful places on earth. My family and I enjoy being outdoors hiking on the endless trails in the Greater Rochester area.
