Senior Principal, Colliers Engineering and Design

Years in current role: 11

What sustainability initiative or environmental goal has your organization made the most progress on in the past year?

Over the past year, Colliers Engineering and Design greatly increased our expertise in sustainable design. Our team now includes 60 LEED- and WELL-certified professionals. Our bench depth and national exposure to best practices helped us make real progress in designing healthier, more energy-efficient spaces for our clients in a cost-effective manner. Internally, we’ve also continued improving how we track energy and carbon data, which gives us clearer insight into our carbon footprint and how we can reduce our impact on an annual basis.

What gives you confidence about how Rochester businesses and institutions are addressing environmental challenges?

I believe in Rochester’s ingenuity. The Golisano Institute for Sustainability at RIT is recognized globally for its expertise in the circular economy and developing practical solutions to reduce pollution at the business process level. Additionally, our global presence in photonics will result in faster, more efficient semiconductors, potentially reducing electrical demand as we move toward an AI future.

What area do you think needs more attention or collaboration to strengthen Rochester’s environmental future?

The regulatory framework in New York State is both well intentioned and convoluted. Projects can require local, county, state, federal and utility provider approvals to move forward. A comprehensive regional master plan, supported by all municipalities, would help balance environmental sustainability with economic development. Being clear about where and how we want to develop, maximizing the use of existing infrastructure and avoiding critical environmental systems will help ensure a resilient future for our community.

What advice would you offer to individuals or organizations that want to start making a measurable environmental difference?

Take the time to understand your personal or corporate carbon footprint and commit to reducing by 10% in 2026.

What’s your favorite way to enjoy the natural beauty of the Rochester area?

I personally enjoy hiking in the many state and local parks in our region. If you have not been to Sterling Nature Center on Lake Ontario, check it out for an exceptional day trip experience.
