What personal or professional environmental effort are you most proud of?

I am deeply proud of the launch of the Indigenous Health Coalition in November 2023. This initiative emerged through an organic process, stemming from discussions between myself, two Indigenous colleagues, and a local nonprofit organization during the COVID-19 pandemic. Initially focused on addressing the disparities impacting Indigenous communities during the pandemic, our meetings evolved to address broader health disparities that continue to affect Indigenous populations all across Turtle Island. For me, the environment and health are inextricably intertwined. My culture and personal values guide my approach to both, emphasizing the essential relationship between environmental well-being and the overall health of our communities.

What are you most optimistic about regarding the Rochester region’s approach to environmental issues?

I am encouraged by Rochester’s approach to environmental issues, particularly food-related initiatives such as urban agriculture, including community gardens, farmers markets, and urban farming. I believe it is essential to expand efforts that increase access to fresh produce and reduce food deserts. Additionally, initiatives focused on environmental justice are critical in advocating for clean air, safe drinking water, and access to green spaces. These efforts play a crucial role in ensuring that all residents, regardless of socioeconomic status, have access to a healthy environment and are key to addressing environmental disparities that impact health disparities as well.

What advice would you give someone who is looking to make a difference in addressing environmental issues?

Turning inward and following my heart is my natural approach, largely shaped by the guidance of my culture. As Mohawk Wolf Clan, we are taught to honor Mother Earth. Central to this teaching is the Thanksgiving Address, which reminds us of the abundance provided by the Creator for our sustainability. This address serves as a meaningful expression of gratitude and offers a powerful reminder of the blessings we receive through our connection with Mother Earth and the world around us. This is what guides me: I would advise finding your personal connection or definition for addressing environmental issues — one that holds significant meaning for you and is not done out of obligation or performance, but rather based on your values.
