President & CEO
Goodwill of the Finger Lakes

Years in current role: Almost 5

What personal or professional environmental effort are you most proud of?

I take pride in the journey Goodwill has embarked on to weave sustainability into the fabric of our mission. Recognizing that climate change does not affect everyone equally; its harshest impacts are often felt by communities of people facing economic hardships. For over a century, Goodwill has been at the forefront of reuse, championing a circular economy before it became a buzzword. Today, we take this legacy further by collaborating with industry pioneers to pilot groundbreaking technologies that repurpose spent post-consumer materials into new raw materials. This innovative approach not only minimizes waste but also sets the stage for the sustainable products of tomorrow. I am committed to taking the lead knowing together we are building a brighter, greener future for all.

What are you most optimistic about regarding the Rochester region’s approach to environmental issues?

I am truly excited about the potential for collaboration in our region as we unite across sectors to explore innovative approaches to environmental challenges. As a member of the Climate Collective Steering Committee, I witness this spirit of cooperation firsthand. There is a genuine openness to experimentation with a strong emphasis on community engagement to guide our decision-making processes. Together, we can pave the way for meaningful change!

What are you most concerned about regarding the Rochester region’s approach to environmental issues?

Throughout Rochester and the Finger Lakes region, there is a shortage of environmental resources, making it challenging to focus on more than just a handful of key strategies. The issue of post-consumer materials is particularly pressing; if the “waste” generated cannot be managed beyond the borders of our communities, it could lead to serious consequences for our environmental efforts. We must address this challenge to foster sustainable practices and create a healthier future for all.

What advice would you give someone who is looking to make a difference in addressing environmental issues?

My advice is simple: begin by making small changes for the environment and share your journey with others. We often hesitate, thinking we need to be perfect before we can inspire or motivate those around us. But the truth is, we are all works in progress, which is what makes us so beautifully human. Excitement can be contagious and has the power to spark genuine change. Embrace your journey and encourage others to make a difference!

What is your favorite outdoor activity in the Rochester area?

I find joy in taking walks and discovering new outdoor trails, which are plentiful throughout the Finger Lakes region. There’s something magical about immersing myself in the serenity, sounds, and breathtaking beauty of nature. It’s during these moments that I gain a deeper perspective and a profound appreciation for what we’ve been given and a sense of responsibility to cherish and protect it.
