Tasked with formulating a campaign to heighten consumer awareness of apples, the creative minds at Myers Creative Imaging became the apple of the American Advertising Federation judges’ eyes.
Myers Creative Imaging won Best of Show at Thursday’s AAF Greater Rochester award show with The Big Flavor, a campaign for the New York Apple Association Inc.
The work featured a news-anchor puppet as well as a field reporter and, through use of plenty of puns — such as “apple-solutely” and “how do you like those apples” — achieved desired results.
It also was a hit with AAF judges.
“Best of Show always comes down to memorability, which is that one piece that stays in your head long after you shut your laptop and walk off,” judge Anshumani Khanna said.
Said judge Marcelo Maciel: “Now you have to promote apples; looks like it’s not going to be a fun campaign to do it, and they were able to it in a very fun and great way.”
John Myers was director and photographer for the work, Jason Yates provided creative direction and editing, Kim Pentheros handled creative direction and art direction, Pete Reiling was in charge of creative direction and copy, and Heather Roman was the producer.
Myers Creative shared Best of Show in 2022 with Brandtatorship for a Scouting in Action campagin.
In this year’s contest, Myers Creative also won one Gold AAF award and combined with Brandtatorship, a frequent collaborative partner, on two Gold wins and five Silvers. Brandtatorship also won a Gold and Silver for its own work.
Partners + Napier won the most Gold and most total awards at the ceremony. Eight P+N campaigns struck gold and six earned Silver.
Wegmans internal team won two Gold awards and five Silver. Truth Collective won two Gold and two Silver.
Other Gold winners included Dixon Schwabl + Co., Heard Creative Optic Sky Productions.
The Mosaic Award, Best of Illustration award and Best of Out-Of-Home & Ambient award all went to Partners + Napier. Best of Digital & Social as well as Best of Integrated Campaigns were won by Truth Collective and Optic Sky won Best of Video & Broadcast.
MacKenzie Dunsmoor of Partners + Napier received the The Up and Coming Award, Megan Jaffarian of Article Group was the Trailblazer Award winner, and Kevin and Chris Flynn of Flynn shared the Silver Achievement Award.
The Silver Award honors those who have made a significant impact on the Rochester advertising community. Winning it has now become a family tradition. Their father, Jerry, who founded the agency in 1967, was honored in 2004.
“What makes this award extra special is the fact that our father Jerry Flynn received the same honor in 2004,” Kevin, now executive advisor of the firm, said in a news release. “It’s another part of his legacy that we’re proud to continue.”
