President and CEO, Anthony L. Jordan Health Corporation

Years in current role: 2

What emerging trends or technologies do you think will have the biggest impact on health care in the next 12 months?

We are seeing the use of AI in so many areas — anywhere from appointment scheduling to assisting with note taking, billing and more. All of this can positively impact the health center operations and help alleviate some of the strain from workforce shortages. It will be very important to make sure that the AI is working for us, and not impacting quality, including equitable care. Along with AI, improving telehealth technologies are really going to allow us to meet people where they are — and not just leave them there.

What’s one lesson the past few years have taught you about resilience or innovation in health care?

Your cultural capital is your own. Don’t barter it away, and don’t underestimate its power to allow you to be ready to pivot very quickly. We have seen this many times recently — fighting COVID, emerging vaccine hesitancy. New solutions don’t always cost more in dollars and cents, but our secret sauce at Anthony Jordan is US. Collaborating with others in the community always expands your universe of resources as well, as you attack new problems on a daily basis.

What skills or qualities do you think are essential for the next generation of health care leaders?

Being an empathetic nerd will serve the next generation of health care leaders well. You’ve got to love to learn and know what you don’t know and how to find it out quickly. At the same time, you have to have a heart for those you work with and those we serve — our patients. It can’t be superficial — you’ve really got to feel it — or you and those around you will be miserable!

What’s your favorite way to unwind or recharge outside of work?

I love to spend time with my family, so vacations with them are a healing balm. My favorite room of the house — my deck — is critical for my peace, so summertime is one of rejuvenation for me. When I am not reading for pleasure to spend time with my book club — Ebony Voices — I am out in my garden growing stuff mostly for my husband and co-workers to eat!
