President & Ceo, Mary Cariola Center

Years in current role: 14

What emerging trends or technologies do you think will have the biggest impact on health care in the next 12 months?

Several emerging trends are shaping health care and support systems for people with disabilities, particularly those with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). There’s an emphasis on tailoring health care and services to the unique needs, preferences and goals of individuals. This empowers people with disabilities to actively participate in their care and decision-making. Assistive technologies are evolving. Innovations in independent living, communication tools for non-verbal individuals and addressing medical needs and mental health, nutrition and fitness. Efforts are intensifying ensuring full societal inclusion through workplace accommodations, accessible public spaces and education. Lastly, disability advocates are watching Medicaid cuts and the increasing use of AI.

What’s one lesson the past few years have taught you about resilience or innovation in health care?

Resiliency and innovation are in our DNA at Mary Cariola. There needs to be a blend of technology, teamwork and policy reform to create adaptable, inclusive and patient-centered care.

What skills or qualities do you think are essential for the next generation of health care leaders?

Patience, kindness and engagement with colleagues. One of Mary Cariola Center’s board members uses the phrase “co-opetition.” Consider your competitors your best colleagues with whom to work collaboratively. Also, for the next generation of professionals in health care and disability support, the most valuable skills will blend technical expertise, empathy and adaptability.

How do you stay motivated and inspired in such a demanding and evolving field?

Seeing the impact of our work with the people we serve. Spending time just supporting a child or having an evening with our staff and residents. Taking time to enjoy personal connections with staff and families served.

What’s your favorite way to unwind or recharge outside of work?

Exercise and walk my dog. She provides a lot of support to just keep walking! Completely unplug and play with grandkids and the little people in my family. They take all your attention and keep you focused on fun.
