URochester lands $6.9M partnership to advance commercial power

The ‘s Laboratory for Laser Energetics () has secured a $6.9 million partnership with Texas-based Focused Inc., marking the largest single industrial-sponsored agreement in the lab’s history and signaling continued momentum in the race toward commercially viable fusion energy. 

The multi-year collaboration aims to tackle one of the most persistent technical barriers in inertial fusion energy. By addressing these challenges, the partnership is expected to accelerate progress toward scalable, sustainable fusion power. 

The agreement also reflects a broader shift in the fusion sector, where universities and national laboratories are increasingly partnering with private companies to move breakthroughs out of the lab and into real-world energy systems.

Findings from the research will directly inform the design of Focused Energy’s planned Fusion Pilot Plant, helping translate laboratory-scale insights into engineering specifications for a future commercial facility. 

The partnership builds on an existing collaboration funded through the U.S. Department of Energy’s INFUSE program and expands work within IFE-COLoR, a DOE-supported consortium led by LLE focused on advancing broadband laser-plasma interaction science. 

Christopher Deeney, director of LLE, emphasized the broader national significance of the work. 

“For decades, LLE has advanced inertial confinement fusion science in support of national security,” Deeney said. “This partnership extends that foundation to a second critical priority: enabling clean, sustainable fusion energy and helping build new U.S. industries.”
