Constellation Brands’ Rochester HQ wins NY Historic Preservation Award

The developers, architects and contractors behind re-creation of the have received a 2025 Excellence in Award from the .

The historic Aqueduct Building and campus was transformed into the corporate office complex for , an endeavor that the Preservation League said was an “extraordinary achievement in and historic preservation.”

“The team is very proud to have had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to lead this historic preservation project,” developer Peter Landers said in a news release. “We were able to revitalize the Aqueduct buildings, leveraging their rich history and historic character to create an innovative space for Constellation Brands’ new headquarters — while also being a catalyst for the reactivation of Rochester’s newly formed and an integral part of the city’s initiative.”

The six interconnected buildings comprise 182,000 square feet, so developers dealt with significant architectural, engineering and cultural challenges to create a modern, collaborative workspace in a 19th-century industrial setting.

A goal of the project was to preserve the original character of the buildings, ensuring the original timber, steel and brick were not hidden but celebrated. At the same time, sustainable features such as a heat pump loop mechanical system and 800 high-performance windows were installed.

“This project shows how effective collaboration, thoughtful design and strategic project management across multiple organizations can breathe new life into a historic district and shape a vibrant future for our community,” said David Crowe, president of Pittsford-based , the architect for Constellation Brands.

The development team included: property owner A50EB, LLC; tenant Constellation Brands; architect CJS Architects; architect and interior designer DJCA Cornerstone; historic tax credit consultant Preservation Studios; structural engineer Jensen/BRV Engineering; MEP/FP engineer Turner Engineering; contractor DGA Builders; and contractor Genesee Construction Service.

Since 1984, the annual Excellence Awards recognize people making a positive change through preservation, including exemplary restoration projects, indispensable publications, individual action and organizational distinction.

This year’s Award winners will be recognized on Nov. 3 in New York City.
