What is one legal issue or trend you’re keeping a close eye on this year?

I am closely monitoring the federal government’s shifting stance on DEI, which stands in clear tension with New York State’s efforts to preserve such initiatives. At the federal level, recent executive orders and agency guidance have attempted to curtail DEI programs. Meanwhile, New York State and its agencies have resisted these moves and refused to comply, with the state’s attorney general issuing press releases, filing legal actions, and joining in amicus briefs in support of DEI initiatives.

What skills do you think are most crucial for new attorneys entering the field today?

Critical thinking and the ability to write concisely and with proper grammar are essential skills for new lawyers. Legal practice requires careful analysis of complex information, the identification of key issues, and the development of well-reasoned arguments. Equally important is the ability to communicate those arguments clearly and effectively in writing. New attorneys who analyze legal research and factual issues with depth and insight and communicate their analysis with clarity and precision are better prepared to advocate effectively and meet the demands of legal practice.

What’s one misconception people often have about your area of law?

Many people believe that litigating a dispute is an exact science, but in reality, civil litigation is a framework for resolving conflicts that are often complex and fact-specific. Our legal system provides tools for navigating disputes, but there is rarely a one-size-fits-all approach, whether in litigation strategy or mediated resolution. Each case requires thoughtful analysis and a tailored approach to achieve the best possible outcome.

How does the Rochester community influence your work or professional philosophy?

Having begun my legal career in another state, I’ve come to genuinely appreciate the professional demeanor and overall collegiality of attorneys in this area. When lawyers avoid needless arguments over minor issues, it serves the best interests of clients on all sides. I also value Rochester’s rich legacy of social progress and advocacy, a tradition that continues to shape and strengthen both the legal and business communities today.

What’s your ideal way to spend a weekend in the Finger Lakes or Western New York?

The Finger Lakes region has some incredible parks, and my ideal weekend includes hiking with my two dogs and watching them swim in a waterfall.
