— a Canadian battery recovery manufacturer which opened its first U.S. operations in Rochester — has received accolades for its technology breakthroughs in the sustainability sector.

The company was named a winner on Fast Company’s inaugural “Next Big Things in Tech” list for its efforts to keep batteries out of landfills.

“We are thrilled to have Li-Cycle and our lithium-ion recycling technologies receive recognition from Fast Company,” said Ajay Kochhar, Li-Cycle’s president, CEO and co-founder. “We look forward to continuing to disrupt the lithium-ion battery recycling industry as we continue to scale our commercial, proven and safe lithium-ion recycling technologies.”

Li-Cycle launched its first U.S. operations at the Eastman Business Park in late 2020 as part of a $175 million-plus project. The business recovers materials from lithium-ion batteries and reintroduces them back into the supply chain.

The company operates one facility at the local site, which produces black mass from spent lithium-ion batteries.

Plans are underway for a second facility there that would process the black mass in order to produce battery grade materials from recycled sources as well as other recycled materials that can be returned to the economy, company leaders said.
