Installation of rooftop solar array nearly finished at Rochester nonprofit
Construction crews for GreenSpark are nearing completion on installation of a rooftop solar array at the Foodlink headquarters along Mt. Read Boulevard in Rochester.
The 679 kWDC array will provide Foodlink with a discount on the utility bill credits it generates over the 25-plus-year lifespan of the system.
Rochester-based GreenSpark developed the project and will provide long-term operations and maintenance. Local entrepreneur Bob Bechtold, who has collaborated with GreenSpark often, financed the project.
“As a businessperson, you typically look for investments that yield a financial return,” Bechtold said in a news release. “In this case, we wanted to invest in something meaningful — something that combines our passion for renewable energy with the value Foodlink provides to our community.”
GreenSpark worked with Upstate Roofing and Carlisle SynTec Systems to preserve and extend the existing roof warranty.
“This project represents the best of what community partnerships can achieve,” GreenSpark CEO Kevin Schulte said. “It’s a privilege to be part of a story where a local entrepreneur is using the success of a mission-driven business to invest in clean energy for a food bank that serves our most vulnerable neighbors.
“It’s a full-circle moment that reflects the power of local action driving lasting impact.”
In 2021-22 GreenSpark converted Foodlink’s Curbside Market vehicles to electric power.
The new rooftop systems should be completed by early December, with utility interconnection expected by year’s end.
