What changes in the legal industry do you believe will have the biggest impact on clients over the next few years?
The use of AI in the legal industry will certainly have a significant impact on clients over the next few years. However, to date I have personally found that AI research can be incorrect and attorneys have to be extremely careful before relying on any AI research.
What is one challenge currently facing the legal profession that deserves more attention?
Staying knowledgeable with evolving technology, including the proper use of AI, is a current challenge that deserves more attention because as attorneys get older it is hard to keep up with the multiple forms of electronic communications. Attorneys are also now “on call” 24/7 as clients text attorneys on their mobile phones, making it difficult for attorneys to ever take time off.
How do you balance legal expertise with client service and relationship-building?
I have never found this aspect of client services difficult. I stay on top of all aspects of brownfield environmental law, which is the main focus of my practice, and explain statutory and regulatory amendments to clients in simple terms so they can understand the changes without compromising substance.
How important is community involvement or pro bono work within your organization?
Knauf Shaw LLP serves the community when we take on citizen group cases against polluters negatively impacting the community.
What is one accomplishment — professional or personal — that you are especially proud of?
I am especially proud of the fact that I helped author the NYS Brownfield Cleanup Law, and have remained active in advising the NYS legislature on the impact of proposed and implemented statutory amendments since it was adopted in 2003.
