Executive Director, JustCause
Years in current role: 9
What changes in the legal industry do you believe will have the biggest impact on clients over the next few years?
I hope that AI will increase access to justice for people who cannot afford to hire an attorney. This is not to suggest that AI will replace lawyers, but rather we can use it to quickly train and support volunteer attorneys in learning new areas of law, and thereby increase the available legal services for clients in need. The technology still has a long way to go, but you can see how it will make legal information more accessible to the masses (for better or worse).
What is one challenge currently facing the legal profession that deserves more attention?
More than 90% of low-income individuals who qualify for free legal aid do not get it due to a lack of available services. Most individuals who cannot afford an attorney will face a loss of income, housing, child custody, immigration status, or other civil legal issue without any professional legal help.
How important is community involvement or pro bono work within your organization?
Pro bono work is obviously central to our organization’s mission. Beyond that, we try to encourage all our staff to volunteer on service projects that are not directly related to our day-to-day work at JustCause. For example, many of our staff participate in the United Way’s annual Day of Caring event, this year engaging in an outdoor community service project to beautify the grounds of a local nonprofit residential housing provider. In addition to helping our community, volunteering on a project together is excellent team building for our staff!
