What changes in the legal industry do you believe will have the biggest impact on clients over the next few years?
Increased access to electronic legal information will have the biggest impact on clients in the coming years. The ability to enter a question into an internet search engine or artificial intelligence chatbot will continue to give clients access to more information than ever before. However, information is not always knowledge. Answers to legal questions often depend on facts, family dynamics, financial considerations, and legal nuances that cannot be adequately explained in a general chatbot response. Whether someone is going through a divorce, planning their estate, or administering the estate of someone they love, these details matter.
What is one challenge currently facing the legal profession that deserves more attention?
One challenge that deserves more attention is attracting and developing the next generation of attorneys in estate and matrimonial/family law, given the number of seasoned attorneys retiring. At the same time, younger lawyers are entering the profession with differing expectations about work, career development and balance. This creates a challenge between the supply and demand for new attorneys. As a result, leaders in the legal profession must be mindful and find mutually beneficial ways to invest time and resources in training young attorneys, rather than simply expecting them to learn on their own.
How do you balance legal expertise with client service and relationship-building?
Legal knowledge is only part of what clients are looking for when they hire an attorney. Clients value responsiveness, communication and confidence. They want their attorneys to be passionate advocates who understand what matters most to them. Whether the matter involves family law, estate planning, elder law, or real estate, I believe people make better decisions when they work with attorneys who take the time to understand their individual circumstances. Strong legal advice and strong client relationships are inseparable, as one does not work without the other.
