What changes in the legal industry do you believe will have the biggest impact on clients over the next few years?

Technologies like workflow automation and artificial intelligence will have the biggest impact on clients over the next few years. Clients expect strong legal analysis, but also demand responsiveness, predictability, transparency and operational efficiency. Law firms will have to adopt these technologies to stay competitive.

What is one challenge currently facing the legal profession that deserves more attention?

Law firms will adopt new technologies that rapidly change their operations, but younger attorneys still need mentorship and career development. Technology is improving efficiency in many areas of practice, which is great, but there is also a risk that firms become so focused on speed and productivity that they fail to adequately train the next generation of lawyers. The legal profession has traditionally relied on apprenticeship training. New attorneys develop judgment by observing experienced lawyers consult with clients, make strategic decisions, handle negotiations, and appear at hearings. Those skills are harder to develop if too much of the profession becomes automated.

What is one accomplishment — professional or personal — that you are especially proud of?

One accomplishment I am especially proud of is serving as coauthor of the New York State Workers Compensation Handbook published by LexisNexis. Workers’ compensation law is a highly specialized and constantly evolving area of practice, and having the opportunity to contribute to a resource used by attorneys and professionals throughout New York State has been especially meaningful to me.
