CEO, Manning Squires Hennig

Years in current role: 8

What’s one challenge in today’s market that keeps you up at night?

Material and labor availability are concerns. While material pricing has stabilized somewhat, lead times can still be unpredictable. At the same time, the region is experiencing a skilled trades shortage. Our union partners are helping keep our projects staffed as needed, but it appears the labor market will operate at a deficit for years to come.

How do you approach decision-making when facing uncertainty on a project?

It comes down to experience, preparation and controlling risk early. We lean on our internal team as well as our subcontractors and suppliers to test assumptions and to identify where things can go wrong before they do. If uncertainty still exists, we quantify it and carry it appropriately — whether that’s in contingency or schedule.

If you could collaborate on any project in the region, what would it be?

There are two upcoming projects that are interesting. One is the Tropics Complex at the Seneca Park Zoo and the other is the new High Falls State Park. We’ve previously had the opportunity to be involved at many cultural attractions in the region — including The Strong, Geva, Eastman Theatre and the Zoo — and it’s a lot of fun to build something that so positively impacts the community.
