Kodak Hall at will undergo significant renovations and technology upgrades after receiving a $1 million New York State aimed at enhancing the experience for performers, students and audiences.

The funding will support improvements in three areas: audio, video and lighting systems — upgrades designed to modernize the historic venue and expand its programming capabilities.

A new audio console will allow for in-hall sound mixing, giving large-scale performances such as Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra concerts greater control over live sound production. The upgrade will also eliminate the need to rent external audio equipment, reducing long-term operating costs.

The grant will also fund installation of a permanent video projection system. Currently, the theatre relies on rented equipment for film screenings, commencement ceremonies, and presentations that require visual media—an approach that adds cost and staff time. A fixed system will streamline operations and allow Kodak Hall to more easily host a broader range of events.

In addition, the theatre’s outdated lighting system will be replaced with energy-efficient LED technology. The new system will support more sophisticated productions, offer a longer lifespan and significantly reduce energy consumption and maintenance expenses.

The funding was announced by state Sen. , who emphasized Kodak Hall’s longstanding role in Rochester’s cultural and economic life.

“Kodak Hall has been the centerpiece of the and culture scene in Rochester and a driver of economic growth downtown for over a century,” Cooney said. “This investment ensures the venue continues to deliver world-class experiences for generations to come.”

Curt Long, president and CEO of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, noted the deep historical connection between the RPO and Eastman Theatre.

“The theatre has been the RPO’s home for more than 100 years,” Long said. “These upgrades will allow us and other users of Kodak Hall to deliver an even better experience to our audiences.”

Eastman School of Dean Kate Sheeran said the improvements will benefit performers and audiences alike.

“By enhancing this beautiful and historic space, we can better accommodate the wide range of performances by our students, faculty, guest artists and community partners,” Sheeran said. “The new technology will elevate the experience on both sides of the stage.”

Located at the University of Rochester’s Eastman School of Music, Kodak Hall hosts hundreds of performances annually, including concerts, festivals, and academic ceremonies.
