Warner School of Education welcomes new dean

The has appointed Melissa Sturge-Apple as dean of the of Education & Human Development following a national search.

Sturge-Apple, a URochester alum and longtime faculty leader, will assume the permanent role on Jan. 1 after serving as interim dean since July 2024. 

A respected voice in administration, Sturge-Apple previously served as vice provost and university dean of graduate education, where she played a central role in shaping URochester’s approach to graduate and postdoctoral training.  

Under her direction, the school invested in strengthened mentorship programs, streamlined academic policies and new career exploration opportunities, positioning the university as a more competitive destination for graduate talent.  

“Melissa brings exceptional strengths as a leader, scholar, and collaborator,” said Nicole Sampson, university provost. “Her record of advancing graduate education, her commitment to students and educators and her nationally recognized research make her uniquely equipped to guide Warner at a pivotal moment.” 

Sturge-Apple is widely regarded as an expert in parenting, child development and family adversity, with over 100 published papers in leading journals. Her research portfolio, supported by more than $35 million in National Institutes of Health funding, has national reach and practical implications for organizations serving children and families.  

She previously worked as a middle and high school counselor. 

“Warner is an incredible community of scholars, educators and students who are deeply committed to improving lives through education and well-being,” Sturge-Apple said. “Together, we will continue preparing the next generation of educators and leaders who can transform systems, elevate student success and drive innovation across the sector.”
