Wendi Heinzelman has been reappointed to a third five-year term as dean of the University of Rochester‘s Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences, a role she has held since 2016. Her new term will begin July 1, 2026.

During her second term, Heinzelman guided the school through initiatives that enhanced its national reputation, boosted research expenditures, expanded academic offerings and strengthened interdisciplinary collaboration.
Under her leadership, research spending rose 36 percent, faculty ranks grew 20 percent and new programs were launched to meet evolving industry needs.
The school also marked milestones including its first endowed professorship in computer science—established in honor of the department’s 50th anniversary—and accelerated fundraising efforts, such as the Wyant challenge to support a 50 percent expansion of the Institute of Optics faculty.
Looking ahead, Heinzelman plans to focus on expanding the school’s research enterprise, increasing opportunities for students and alumni engagement, and overseeing the design and construction of a new Transformational Materials and Technologies building.
“It has been a privilege to serve as dean of the Hajim School and to work alongside such talented and dedicated faculty, staff and students,” Heinzelman said. “I am honored to continue this work and excited about what we will achieve in the years ahead.”
