Amazon’s $500K donation will fund STEM programs for underserved youth
A $500,000 donation by Amazon will help subsidize Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) programs for underserved youth populations in Greater Rochester.
The Rochester Museum & Science Center (RMSC) and Greater Rochester Afterschool & Summer Alliance (GRASA) each will receive $250,000. GRASA is a Rochester Area Community Foundation initiative.
Funding will be used for a variety of programs, including Out of School Time summer learning programs that focus on STEM education. Some of those initiatives are underway at the RMSC.
“As we continue to expand our footprint in Rochester and New York overall, we have a keen interest in growing learning opportunities for today’s students,” Carley Graham Garcia, head of community affairs for Amazon in New York, said in a news release.
“We are grateful for the tremendous partnerships we have established so far in the region to pinpoint where we can make an impact and lift up the community where it’s needed most.”
Months before the 2.6-million-square-foot robotics fulfillment center in Gates opened, Amazon prioritized community outreach. The center employs more than 1,000 full- and part-time workers.
“Over the past two years, Amazon has donated an additional $100,000 in monetary and in-kind donations to a variety of organization in the Rochester area, including the YMCA of Greater Rochester, Rochester Hispanic Youth Baseball League, Junior Achievement of Central Upstate New York and Neil Armstrong Elementary School.
Wednesday’s investment into STEM programs “will help children learn and grow, support working parents and equip out-of-school time providers with the training and resources they need to thrive,” said Simeon Banister, Community Foundation president and CEO.
