Julie Berkhof, director of Regional Nursing at Wilmot Cancer Institute, has received the Region Leadership Award from the New York Organization for Nursing Leadership. She was one of four nursing leaders in New York state to receive the recognition.

The award is given to nurse leaders who demonstrate exemplary leadership within their institution, community and the nursing profession.

Berkhof oversees nursing at Wilmot’s 14 community oncology locations. She uses her clinical expertise and operational knowledge to support these centers that collectively care for millions of cancer patients throughout the 27-county Wilmot catchment area.

Additionally, Berkhof’s recent doctoral work included integrating a geriatric screening tool for all new cancer patients older than 70. Berkhof – who has a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree – will present the work at a conference in Spain later this year.

Mary Carey, professor of Nursing and director of the Clinical Nursing Research Center, and KC Clevenger, chief nursing officer at Wilmot Cancer Institute, partnered to nominate Berkhof.

Earlier this month, Carey attended the event in Tarrytown, Westchester County, with Berkhof to accept the award.

Clevenger said she is excited that Berkhof’s leadership contributions are being recognized and this is a well-deserved achievement.

“Julie has been an amazing asset to the Wilmot Nursing team since she started in her role as director of Regional Nursing many years ago,” Clevenger said. “I am beyond proud of the leadership she demonstrates in bringing our nursing teams from throughout the region together. We are grateful to have her on the Wilmot team.”
