The University of Rochester has been awarded a $3.8 million, five-year Healthcare Education and Life-Skills Program (HELP) grant from New York state to expand career advancement opportunities for employees while addressing some of its most in-demand workforce needs.
The university is one of 21 organizations selected to receive HELP funding, which was announced in September 2025.
The grant will support the expansion of the university’s existing Career Pathways Program (URCP), enhancing access for eligible employees pursuing careers as surgical technologists, radiologic technologists and dental assistants. New program benefits include full tuition coverage, paid work or release time, and personalized career coaching.
In addition, the program will provide emergency financial assistance to help participants navigate unexpected challenges such as housing, transportation, childcare, or food insecurity, which are barriers that can otherwise hinder completion.
Since its launch in 2022, URCP has retained 78 percent of its graduates, most of whom have transitioned into clinical roles. Over the next five years, the university plans to double enrollment in the program.
“As a leading employer in the community, we are dedicated to strengthening and fostering career advancement of our staff,” said David Linehan, MD, CEO of the University of Rochester Medical Center. “A highly skilled and passionate workforce is critical to upholding our commitment to the health of our community. This grant will help us expand career pathway programs to ensure our workforce can grow professionally, which is fundamental to our mission to help people live their healthiest lives.”
