Hammer Packaging acquired by Illinois printer

A fourth-generation, family-owned Rochester commercial printer has been acquired by an Illinois company.

Corp., which got its start in Rochester more than 100 years ago, has been sold to Fort Dearborn Co., a leading supplier of high-impact decorative labels located in Elk Grove, Ill. Financial details of the were not disclosed.

“As the fourth generation to own the company, I have guided the company with a ‘Lead. Don’t follow.’ philosophy,” said Hammer Packaging President and CEO . “In order to continue our growth and thrive, we made the historic decision to join Fort Dearborn Co. I am excited about this new chapter in Hammer Packaging’s journey and believe it is only the beginning of a great future for the Hammer Packaging Co., our customers and the Rochester community.”

Hammer Packaging was founded in Rochester in 1912 by Hammer’s great-grandfather. The company grew from one that specializes in cut & stack, in-mold, pressure-sensitive, roll-fed and shrink sleeve labels and flexible packaging. The company has two production plants in Rochester and West Henrietta and employs more than 450 people.

The company has won numerous awards over the years and Hammer himself has been named Small Business Person of the Year, has been inducted to the Rochester Business Hall of Fame and has been awarded the Herbert W. Vanden Brul Entrepreneurial Award.

“We look forward to working with our Hammer Packaging associates and continuing the legacy they’ve built,” said Fort Dearborn Company CEO Kevin Kwilinski. “We’re also very excited about the growth opportunities this acquisition presents and look forward to the addition of their expertise which will be an excellent complement to our strengths”.

As a platform company, Fort Dearborn has been a leader in the consolidation of the industry.
