The Rochester City Council has announced the appointment of LaShay Harris as South District representative.
Harris will replace former council vice president Adam McFadden, who resigned following a federal criminal indictment in February. Harris currently serves as the 27th District (which includes the 19th Ward) representative in the Monroe County Legislature, a position she’s held since 2015.
“The council reviewed and gave consideration to all the applicants, but we kept coming back to the experience that one person had both in the community and in public service,” said council president Loretta Scott. “I am pleased to announce that the council has selected County Legislator LaShay Harris to serve on the council as the South District Representative.” Harris has served the South District as an elected official for three years, as well as the city as a member of the Board of Assessment and Review and the Nuisance Advisory Board, and through various community organizations, Scott added.
Harris is slated to carry out the remainder of McFadden’s term, which expires at the end of the calendar year. Council will hold a special meeting on Tuesday, April 30 to formally vote on Harris’s appointment.
In the April monthly meeting of City Council, council member at-large Willie Lightfoot was tapped to replace McFadden’s post as council vice president.
“It is a great honor to be given the opportunity to continue to serve the residents of the city’s Southwest Quadrant as a member of the Rochester City Council. I am grateful for the support of my constituents and the members of the City Council for selecting me to serve as the South District Representative,” Harris said. “I am aware that with new horizons come new challenges and I look forward to working to resolve those challenges for the betterment of my constituents and the city as a whole.”
