New York has 850 solar projects installed or in development, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Thursday.

The Finger Lakes Region has 53 projects under two community campaigns: Solarize the Flower City and Solar Orleans.

The projects are funded by the second round of locally organized “Solarize” campaigns under the state’s $1 billion NY-Sun Initiative. Cuomo has set a goal for the state to have 50 percent of the electricity in New York from renewable energy sources by 2030.

“Solarize campaigns create opportunities for community members to work together to reduce energy costs and protect the environment,” said Alicia Barton, president and CEO of New York State Energy Research and Development Authority.
