System helps track patient status

Listen to this article

Unity Hospital has installed technology that lets relatives and friends of surgical patients track patient status.
The system uses software that provides real-time information entered by providers treating the patient. The software, developed by Cerner Corp., is an extension of information systems already in use in hospital operating rooms, hospital officials said.
Surgical patients are assigned a confidential number on admission. Family members and friends can then use the identification number to get step-by-step updates giving information such as whether a patient is being prepared for surgery, already in surgery or in recovery. Information is accessed through a tracking board in the hospital’s lobby.
Unity plans to continue to maintain a volunteer-staffed information desk in the hospital lobby and to supply pagers to loved ones awaiting word of surgical patients’ status, hospital officials said.
