Shareholder and Co-Chair Handbooks & Policies Practice Group, Littler

Years in current role: 16 at Littler; 1 as Co-Chair

What is one challenge currently facing the legal profession that deserves more attention?

Just last year, clients approached AI with caution, questioning its reliability, security and appropriate role in legal services. Use of AI by firms required permission, explanation and reassurance. Today, clients increasingly expect or require law firms to incorporate AI into their workflows to enhance efficiency, reduce costs and deliver faster insights. Rather than a differentiator, AI has become a baseline expectation. This shift shows how quickly client expectations are changing, and how important it is for firms to keep up and stay ahead. At Littler, we have embraced ethical and responsible use of AI to provide excellent quality of service.

How do you balance legal expertise with client service and relationship-building?

Balancing legal knowledge and experience with client service requires understanding each client’s business, objectives and risk profile. By immersing myself in client operations, I am able to offer practical, tailored advice, rather than purely legal guidance. Innovation, including pricing strategies and utilization of emerging technologies, builds efficiency in these relationships. Participating in agency notice-and-comment periods for new or amended laws, to shape clear, functional regulations for my clients on complex compliance issues, build partnerships. My multi-tiered approach allows me to provide high-quality counsel and establish long-term, trusted relationships.

How important is community involvement or pro bono work within your organization?

At Littler, our commitment to pro bono work is woven into the fabric of our firm, guiding our actions every day. We use our legal skills and experience to support individuals and communities who might otherwise lack access to representation, ensuring their voices are heard. Our efforts span a wide range of causes, including support for military veterans, LGBTQ+ individuals, immigrants, and other often marginalized groups. As co-founder of the Handbooks & Policies Practice Group, I collaborate with nonprofits to provide employment law guidance and multistate compliance support, allowing these organizations to focus on their passion and advance their missions.
