F.F. Thompson Hospital has earned national recognition once again, being named to Becker’s Hospital Review‘s 2026 list of “100 Great Community Hospitals.”
The Canandaigua-based hospital is the only New York institution to make this year’s list, which recognizes hospitals for their clinical excellence, operational performance and commitment to serving their communities. According to Becker’s, hospitals are selected based on nominations and insights from rankings and ratings, and cannot pay for inclusion.
This marks the third time Thompson has been recognized by the Chicago-based healthcare publication, following previous appearances on the list in 2023 and 2025.
The honor comes amid a period of significant growth and investment for the 113-bed hospital, which serves patients throughout the Finger Lakes region.
Founded in 1904, F.F. Thompson Hospital has evolved into a comprehensive healthcare network that includes 14 primary care practices, four OB/GYN offices, three urgent care centers, two lab draw stations, two outpatient pharmacies, three off-site rehabilitation locations and an off-site breast imaging center.
The hospital has also made strides in workforce recruitment and retention. In 2025, Thompson welcomed 35 physicians and advanced practice providers without incurring headhunter placement fees, and reduced its reliance on travel and agency nurses to just two positions hospitalwide.
The hospital recently launched a multimillion-dollar campus improvement initiative and installed a new GE SIGNA Artist wide-bore 1.5T MRI scanner featuring feet-first imaging technology designed to reduce claustrophobia and improve patient comfort. It is also expanding its birthing center from 10 to 12 labor and delivery rooms to accommodate growing demand.
Thompson’s recognition also reflects its strong track record for quality and patient outcomes. In November 2025, the hospital received its fifth consecutive Magnet designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center, one of nursing’s highest honors for excellence in patient care and professional practice.
Additionally, the hospital is the only organization in New York to receive the “Excellence in Spiritual Care Award” from the HealthCare Chaplaincy Network.
The organization holds Joint Commission certificates of distinction for hip replacement, knee replacement, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, advanced perinatal care and advanced primary stroke care. The Surgical Review Corporation has also designated Thompson as a center of excellence for hernia surgery, robotic surgery and minimally invasive surgery.
