Magnet status is widely considered one of the most prestigious indicators of nursing quality and organizational performance.

Fewer than 10 percent of U.S. hold Magnet recognition, and only about 1.5 percent have achieved the designation five times—most of them large, academic medical centers such as UR Medicine’s Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.

Thompson Hospital has maintained Magnet status since 2004. Its latest designation, which extends through 2029, follows a rigorous review process that included extensive documentation, a public comment period and a site visit from ANCC appraisers in September.

“Our success stems from the exceptional dedication our nursing professionals demonstrate every day in delivering outstanding patient care,” said Hazel Robertshaw, vice president of patient care services and chief nursing officer at . “This recognition validates our commitment to nursing excellence and reinforces our reputation as a leader. It reflects the innovation, expertise and compassionate care that define our nursing culture.”

In addition to its re-designation, Thompson was cited as an exemplar in nine areas under the ANCC’s Exemplary Professional Practice standards, outperforming national benchmarks in a number of areas, including reducing falls with injury.

Several patient experience measures—including care coordination, courtesy and respect, pain, and safety—were also recognized with exemplar status.

Thompson Hospital will be honored alongside other Magnet-recognized organizations at the ANCC National Magnet Conference, scheduled to take place next October in Chicago.
