The town of Greece has received certification as an Age-Friendly Community and its commitment to serving the needs of seniors aligns with national and international standards.
The certification meets standards of AARP‘s Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities as well as the World Health Organization‘s Global Network for Age-Friendly Cities and Communities. Both programs are dedicated to improving the quality of life for older adults.
Age-friendly communities are designed to support healthy aging by addressing key areas such as accessible transportation, housing, outdoor spaces, social participation, civic engagement and community support.
“This certification reflects our ongoing commitment to making Greece a place where residents of all ages can thrive,” town Supervisor Jeff McCann said in a news release. “Our older adults have helped build this community, and they deserve a town that actively works to meet their needs.”
The town’s Department of Planning and Economic Development has been directed to develop a comprehensive Age-Friendly Action Plan within one year.
The plan will outline goals, programs and initiatives designed to improve service, infrastructure and community resources for older residents.
Other towns, cities and counties in the Greater Rochester area included on AARP’s list of Age-Friendly States and Communities: Avon, Brockport, Geneva, Mount Morris and the city of Rochester, plus Monroe and Wayne counties.
