Special Touch Bakery has acquired Lanovara Specialty Foods, Inc., formalizing a decade-long partnership and significantly expanding both its product offerings and integrated workforce.
The acquisition positions Special Touch Bakery to grow beyond its core pie business into a broader portfolio that includes cookies, cannoli, cakes and other specialty desserts. The move also strengthens production capacity and supports long-term sustainability, with the organization expecting it could potentially double the size of its integrated workforce.
Leaders say the expanded capabilities will enhance the bakery’s fundraising and corporate gifting programs, providing schools, community organizations and businesses with a wider range of products while advancing its mission of inclusive employment.
The relationship between the two organizations dates back to before Special Touch Bakery’s founding in 2018. Lanovara was an early vocational partner with Holy Childhood, the bakery’s parent organization, helping provide job training and employment opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities.
“This is not just a business decision, it’s a mission decision,” said Donna Dedee, president and CEO of Holy Childhood and Special Touch Bakery. “Lanovara has been a valued partner since the beginning of our vocational employment efforts. This acquisition allows us to create more jobs, expand training opportunities, and grow our integrated workforce in a sustainable way.”
Lanovara, a century-old Rochester business known for its quality baked goods and distribution expertise, brings established relationships with regional retailers and food service partners, including Wegmans. The acquisition is expected to strengthen Special Touch Bakery’s ability to serve existing customers while pursuing new growth opportunities.
As part of the transition, longtime Lanovara owner Bert Salisbury will remain involved as a consultant, helping ensure continuity and maintain key customer relationships.
Founded more than 100 years ago, Lanovara has been a staple in the Rochester food community, with Salisbury leading the company for nearly two decades.
“Lanovara has been a part of the Rochester community for more than a century, and the quality of our handmade products, our employees, and our long-term customers are things I’m incredibly proud of,” Salisbury said. “Joining forces with Special Touch through this acquisition is a powerful testament to the people, the mission, and the good that can come from building businesses rooted in community.”
