RIT opens research hub to power growth in high-tech innovation
Rochester Institute of Technology’s new research building opened Dec. 2, marking a significant investment in the university’s growing research enterprise.
The 39,000-square-foot building features 19 labs that are reconfigurable and designed to accommodate a wide spectrum of research, including in the areas of high-speed computing, artificial intelligence, wet chemistry, cognitive science, advanced manufacturing, neuroscience and more.
The space will also support new programs and enable the strategic recruitment of faculty researchers across disciplines.
“This building reflects RIT‘s commitment to giving our faculty, staff and students what they need to push boundaries, pursue bold ideas and make an impact in the world,” RIT President Bill Sanders said. “In many ways, the RIT Research Building represents the next step in our journey, from a university known for innovation in teaching and technology, to one equally recognized for research that changes lives and moves the world forward.”
Research awards, as well as national funding sources for economic development, have increased to record levels at RIT, prompting the need for more research laboratory space on campus, officials said.
RIT announced in September that it was celebrating a record year for sponsored research funding in fiscal year 2025, receiving $105 million. Some 72 percent of its awards came from federal funding agencies.
RIT Vice President for Research Ryne Raffaelle said the new building solidifies RIT’s commitment to innovation, collaboration and the pursuit of knowledge.
“It reflects the vision and hard work of many and embodies our shared belief that research and discovery are central to our mission as a university,” he said. “May this building stand as a beacon of innovation, collaboration, and excellence for years to come.”
