ESL survey reveals where Rochester area homeowners want to move

, and are the top three preferred destinations for homeowners looking to move within Greater Rochester, according to a new homeowner survey conducted by . 

The survey, administered in the second quarter of this year across the Greater Rochester and Finger Lakes region, aimed to capture homeowner sentiment and shed light on local trends.

Nearly 300 respondents from 31 towns across Monroe, Ontario, Livingston and Seneca counties participated, answering nearly two dozen questions about the current housing market. 

ESL logoAmong the findings: 

  • More than half of respondents have not considered moving since 2023. 
  • 63% said they are not considering a move at all. 
  • Of those who have considered relocating, 41% cited downsizing as their main reason, and
  • 55% said proximity to family and friends drives their decision about where to live. 

“With such significant changes transpiring in the housing market over the last several years, we think it’s important to learn directly from local homeowners,” said Jim Miller, vice president and director of mortgage lending at ESL Federal Credit Union. “This report provides valuable benefits to our local realtors, homeowners and broader community in their continued navigation of the housing market.”
