Rochester Housing Authority christens scattered-site housing project
State officials and local housing proponents announced Tuesday the completion of 53 new homes in Rochester’s Beechwood neighborhood, part of a $27 million scattered site redevelopment.
The project along Federal Street has transformed obsolete Rochester Housing Authority (RHA) properties into affordable, supportive homes for families and individuals struggling with homelessness.
Construction began with the demolition of eight blighted structures on the RHA’s Federal Street property. They were replaced by two multifamily buildings and a single-family home for a total of 18 homes. Another 35 homes in the Beechwood neighborhood were were rebuilt or rehabilitated.
There are 51 units within the project reserved as affordable for households earning up to 60 percent of the Area Median Income (AMI).
“This milestone marks more than the completion of new housing — it is a celebration of what can be achieved when we make meaningful investments in the future of our communities,” Miriam Zinter, Community Preservation Corp. vice president, said in a news release.
The project was developed by the RHA with consultant Edgemere Development. State financing includes state and federal Low Income Housing Tax Credits that generate $13 million in equity and $7 million in subsidy from New York State Homes and Community Renewal.
Community Preservation Corp. provided a State of New York Mortgage Agency-insured $2 million permanent loan.
The development includes nine apartments with supportive services for individuals experiencing homelessness.
“These home are more than just buildings, they represent our renewed commitment to preserving public housing, revitalizing neighborhoods and strengthening our community,” RHA Executive Director Shawn Burr said.
