The well-established hotel on State Street in downtown Rochester is flying a new brand flag.

The Holiday Inn Rochester Downtown has rebranded to the Wyndham Rochester Downtown, part of a continuing makeover of the 217-room hotel.

“It’s a new beginning,” said Jason Brown, director of sales and the hotel’s acting general manager. “We’re in the process of finishing a multi-million-dollar revitalization that we expect to be complete before spring.”

Brown said the refurbishing included upgrades to the lobby and restaurants, new flooring and bathroom vanities, new 50-inch smart TVs and new desk chairs.

The multi-year reconstruction of State Street is complete, as is renovation of Austin Steward Plaza along the Genesee River behind the hotel. The plaza is part of the city of Rochester’s ROC the Riverway initiative.

“The premier rooms on the riverside are going to be what they once were,” Brown said.

The main Holiday Inn sign above the seventh floor at the front of the building has been removed. A temporary banner has been wrapped around the ground sign. Wyndham signage is expected to arrive in a month or so, Brown said.

Since opening in 1969, the hotel has flown a variety of brand flags, starting with The Flagship Hotel, which was part of the American Airlines hotel chain. The property transformed to the Americana Rochester in the 1970s, then became a Crown Plaza, followed by the Rochester Plaza. The property joined the IHG chain as a Holiday Inn in 2015.

The Wyndham brand includes 23 flags, including Ramada, Wyndham Garden, Registry Collection Hotels, Microtel, Super 8 and LaQuinta.
