Rochester’s LLC will receive more than $1 million in federal funding to boost its research and production of innovative OLED light technology.

The funding was made available through the Department of Energy’s Small Business Innovation Research program. OLEDWorks will use the funds to further improve efficiency and lower the costs of flexible OLED lighting panels, which will help reduce energy consumption while simultaneously providing healthier, unique lighting solutions that are cost-competitive in the mainstream lighting markets.

OLEDs, or organic light-emitting diodes, are thin sheets of light that create a gentle and diffuse illumination that is calm, soft and comfortable to view.

“This federal funding is the perfect shot in the arm for the Rochester-Finger Lakes economy and for OLED Works, which will use it to fuel its groundbreaking research and development of cost- and energy-efficient lighting,” U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer said in a statement.

The purpose of the SBIR program is to stimulate technological innovation in the private sector, strengthen the role of small business in meeting federal research, increase the commercial application of DoE supported research results and improve the return on federal investments in research for economic and social benefits to the nation.

“OLED light is a naturally glare-free light source with no UV or blue light risk,” OLEDWorks’ Chief Technology Officer Michael Boroson said. “As Asian governments are increasing their support of companies entering the OLED lighting market, the DOE’s ongoing support is critical to increasing American high-tech manufacturing jobs and sustaining the United States’ leadership position in this rapidly emerging technology and market.”

OLEDWorks was founded in Rochester in 2010 and is a global leader in the development and production of innovative OLED lighting solutions. In addition to its local manufacturing facility, OLEDWorks also has a plant in Aachen, Germany.
