The Sears store at The Greece Ridge Center will close in mid-July, a company spokesman said, as part of a plan to eliminate unprofitable stores.
The closing will result in the displacement of 50 store employees as well as nine others who work at the Sears automotive store, according to a filing with the state Department of Labor.
“Many of our larger stores are too big for our needs. Having fewer stores – and the right format – will help us bring Sears Holdings to a size and place to meet the realities of the changing retail world,” said Howard Riefs, director of corporate communications for Sears Holdings, which represents Sears and Kmart stores.
Riefs said severance would be offered to those employees who are eligible and they would also have the opportunity to apply for open positions at local Sears and Kmart stores. There are no longer any Kmart stores in the Rochester area, however, with the closest appearing to be in Batavia and Bath.
A liquidation sale will begin on Friday, April 27, Riefs said.
Sears has been part of the mall’s complex for nearly 50 years, since Long Ridge Mall opened in 1969.
With the closing of the Greece store, two Sears department stores remain in the Rochester area: at Marketplace Mall and Eastview Mall.
