The Strong is taking play one step further as it boosts science, technology, engineering and math skills in a series of new workshops.

The new -inspired Are You a Maker? workshop series encourages participants to go hands-on with everyday materials—such as cardboard boxes, paper and lightbulbs—to explore scientific principles and engineer complex creations.

The workshops, which begin Jan. 13, are designed and led in part by Dan Schneiderman, research associate at Rochester Institute of Technology’s Media Arts Games Interaction Creativity Center. Schneiderman also is a co-chair of the annual Rochester Mini Maker Faire, which combines elements of a science fair, craft fair and carnival.

The series is offered in two time-specific sessions, each limited to 15 child-adult pairs.

The Maker workshops will conclude with a celebration on Jan. 28, where participants will share their favorite construction with the public in a special display at the Strong.
