Subway Development
of Western New York

Joseph Franch is in the business of opening restaurants.
He agreed to become a development agent for Subway Franchise World Headquarters in Milford, Conn., on an independent-contractor basis, in October 1994. He recently incorporated his business, Subway Development of Western New York Inc.
Subway is trying to explode into the Northeast market, Franch says. There are 30 in the Rochester area; Franch is trying to boost that number to 50 by the end of 1997.
“It’s a tremendous opportunity,” he says, adding that his goal is to make Subway “the No. 1 franchise in the area.”
Franch says he is looking for strategic locations and will scrutinize proposed locations before approving franchises.
Franch owned five Subways and lived in Toronto before relocating to Rochester to start his development business. The ties to the area, though, already were established.
Franch’s wife, Sheryl–who works with him–is a Rochester native.
And Franch owns half of the Marketplace Mall Subway, although he is in the process of selling his shares to partner Matthew Ruszczyk.
His new business employs three locally. Franch wants that number to increase to five in the next year.
With 11,800 units in 43 countries, Subway is the second-largest worldwide restaurant franchise operation, behind only McDonald’s Corp., he says. Three are under construction in the Rochester area, one on Fairport Road and two in Wayne County.
