Chairman, Hurlbut Care Communities
Years in current role: 38
What decision or strategic shift in 2025 had the greatest impact on your business?
A major decision I made in 2025 that had a significant impact on my business was stepping down from President to becoming Chairman. Robert G. Hurlbut stepped up from Vice President to President. As a fourth-generation leader, he has worked incredibly hard to earn this role. I can’t fully describe the joy and pride I feel knowing that my son is taking on the responsibility of caring for our elderly.
What developments in your industry are you watching most closely as you look ahead to the coming year?
One of the key developments in our industry that I will be watching closely is the Medicaid rate, particularly as it relates to the 2026–2027 budget. The question remains whether the governor’s promises will be fulfilled. There has been no permanent Medicaid rate increase in nearly 19 years. I often ask whether anyone could live on the salary they earned 19 years ago — so far, no one has said yes. Yet the nursing home industry is expected to do exactly that.
What’s one interest or activity you hope to make more time for in the coming year?
An interest of mine for the upcoming year is to prioritize time with family and friends while allowing myself more opportunities to unwind and enjoy life.
