Rochester firm awarded state funding to advance cancer detection technology
A Rochester-based medical imaging company was among 25 New York businesses awarded funding to advance its technology through the state’s Innovation Matching Grants program.
BIRED IMAGING received support in round three of the Empire State Development‘s Division of Science, Technology and Innovation (NYSTAR) initiative, which launched in May 2024.
The program is designed to accelerate the growth of small businesses and the development of cutting-edge technologies in New York.
BIRED IMAGING’s technology combines numerical simulation and infrared imaging for detection of female breast cancer. The company’s approach is designed to complement mammography, offering an improved screening modality for earlier and more accurate diagnoses.
Eligible applicants included companies that had secured funding from the federal government’s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs were eligible for NYSTAR matching grants up to $200,000. A total of $3 million in grants was awarded in round three.
Ben Verschueren, NYSTAR executive director, said the matching grants program is aimed to bridge the gap between R&D and commercialization, with awardees using the funds to market their innovations, gain investor awareness and safeguard their intellectual property.
“By providing additional funds to these homegrown projects in high-growth industries, we’re accelerating the kind of technological and economic progress that will benefit all New Yorkers,” added Hope Knight, Empire State Development president, CEO and commissioner.
