() is closing its Rochester facility, which will affect some 98 employees.

Leaders at UNC Dairy, one of the largest dairy cooperatives in the country, said the decision to close the Rochester plant was difficult but necessary for the long-term sustainability of the company, and driven by evolving market trends, including declining demand for fresh fluid milk.

“UNC Dairy recognizes its long-standing presence in the Rochester community and deeply appreciates the contributions of its employees and the support of the community,” said Kevin Ellis, the cooperative’s CEO. “We understand the significant impact this will have on our dedicated employees and their families. Our absolute priority now is to support them through this transition.”

The closure is anticipated to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2025.

UNC Dairy is working closely with the employees affected, offering expedited consideration for open positions within the company.

Production from the Rochester facility will be absorbed by other UNC Dairy plants to minimize disruption to local Rochester customers. Its truck maintenance program is also changing during this transition period so it can reduce costs and improve fleet performance.

A third party will take over garage operations in Rochester and Syracuse, company leaders said.
