The Arc of Monroe unveils training academy for direct support professionals
The Arc of Monroe this week unveiled its Arc Advance Academy, a state-of-the-art training center located at its Rochester headquarters.
Among the first of its kind in New York state, the academy is designed to ensure that all direct support professionals (DSPs) serving individuals with developmental disabilities are fully equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide high-quality care.
The interactive facility features a mock home environment — including a kitchen, laundry room, bedroom, and bathroom—alongside classroom space and advanced technology. This setup allows staff to train in real-world scenarios that mirror the environments where they work every day.
In the near future, the academy will also include a virtual reality lab to offer immersive, hands-on learning opportunities for both new and veteran staff. Ongoing refresher courses will also be held to support continuous learning and skill development.
“From our agency’s perspective, this initiative underscores our dedication to strengthening the foundation of support that transforms lives,” said Tracy Petrichick, president and CEO of The Arc of Monroe. “We recognize the vital role our direct support professionals play every day, and we are committed to investing in their growth and development.”
The Arc Advance Academy was made possible through a philanthropic gift from B. Thomas Golisano. In recognition of his contribution, the academy space will be named in his honor.
“His gift is not just a donation; it’s a catalyst for meaningful change,” Petrichick said. “His kindness has opened doors for us to turn our aspirations into reality and to serve more people in impactful ways.”
